All Muslims are Not terrorists. All terrorists are[n’t] muslims, anymore.

A little note:

This post has been lying in my drafts for the longest time, I didn’t know whether this was suitable or not however I decided it needs to be out there. Let me know what you guys think.

It’s difficult surviving as a Muslim along with residing in Pakistan which the world calls as a ‘sanctuary’ for the terrorists. Throughout many intense debates and discussions that I managed to sit through, favoring or rather emphasizing that muslims are not terrorists, one such argument would Always weaken my case.I would want to pull my hair every time I heard, “All muslims may not be terrorists, but ALL terrorists are muslims”.

Anders Behring Breivik, a Christian has joined the list. Whether the world calls him a ‘madman’ or ‘Christian fundamentalist’ or an ‘Attacker’ he is nevertheless a ‘terrorist’. And although my heart weeps for the victims of the Norwegian attacks, I’m glad to know it wasn’t a muslim. It wasn’t another illogical Islamic extremist that was satisfied with the killings of innocent people.  And it wasn’t Pakistan that was linked to the attack like any and every attack that takes place.

This by no means does this mean that we rejoice that those who have always raised fingers at us, have now themselves jumped into the madness of oppression. This only raises further questions. When a peace-loving nation such as Norway can witness such an atrocious event which involved anti-Islamic sentiments, then is there a higher probability that those countries which have faced the brunt of Muslim extremists will breed a new generation of ‘fundamentalists’ that are ready to retaliate in their own realm? And if so are we back to square one which will haunt the Muslims as those who started this never-ending war of beliefs?

Where are the answers?

    A very essential post, Nida.

I write ones like this too, and leave them hanging in the drafts because I’m not sure whether it merits being out there. But i guess the real reason I write posts like this, and I suspect it’s the same for you, is to stay sane and get all those muddled thoughts into a (somewhat) coherent pattern.

Extremists exist in every society. They always have and always will. It’s our job as moderates to promote ideas of tolerance to counter their hateful discourse. These are wars that can’t be won with weapons. We need to go back to the basics, to ideas like treating all human beings equal, regardless of cast or creed. Because if we lose this fight, we’ve seen what will happen. Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia were politically opposite ideologies. But their effects on their respective people were terrifyingly similar.

That’s what the world is morphing into, back and white ‘opposites’ that are actually quite similar. We need to reclaim the grey of tolerance, diversity and plurality if humanity is to progress.

Thankyou Shahzeb for a very comforting reply.

You’ve given such an important message which needs to be realized by the world. NOW.
With so much going around the country, one feels like throwing patriotism right out the window. And this is definitely my way of clearing my head, letting it out there which may or may not be felt by others the same way. But its important to stay rational, positive and open minded.

It was never true that all terrorists were Muslims, the Tamil Tigers were not Muslims and the terrorist group Irgun consisted of Jews. All of these existed long before 9/11
